Page 2 — Architecture and capacity

Architecture diagram — text description

VOICE runs on Windows and Ubuntu in premises-based and hybrid deployments. Users connect from headquarters, branch offices, customer premises, home offices and mobile locations. PSTN, ISDN and SIP trunks provide connectivity. Unified communications devices include IP and analogue phones, softphones, DECT, Wi-Fi and mobile devices, and web video. Advanced features include call management, call centre, contact centre, call recording, door phones, door switches, presence, alarms, mass notification, hospitality, paging and music on hold.

Total system capacity
  • Up to 60,000 lines, in any combination of registered stations and trunks (notes 1 and 2).
  • Up to 30,000 UC-enabled user seats.
  • Up to 20 Unified Communications Manager (UCM) server nodes.
  • Up to 1,000,000 Busy Hour Call Attempts.
  • Up to 5,120 media-server sessions for voicemail, auto attendant, call monitor/barge and call recording.
  • Up to 20,480 concurrent mobility calls (note 3).
  • Up to 2,000,000 contact entries in the 3C system.
Capacity per UCM server node (note 4)
  • Up to 6,000 lines in any combination of registered stations and trunks, including up to 999 C-link trunks (notes 5 and 6).
  • Up to 3,000 UC-enabled user seats.
  • Up to 50,000 Busy Hour Call Attempts.
  • Voicemail, auto attendant, call monitor/barge and call recording.
  • Up to 1,024 concurrent mobility calls.
SIP support

The source datasheet identifies these as SIP and SIP-related standards supported on the UNIVERGE 3C system (note 9).

SIP stations: RFC2833, RFC3261, RFC3262 (limited support, note 10), RFC3263, RFC3264, RFC3265, RFC3311, RFC3325, RFC3326, RFC3428, RFC3515, RFC3581, RFC3665, RFC3725, RFC3842, RFC3891, RFC4028, RFC4411 and RFC4412.

SIP trunks: the core standard is RFC3261. Originally defined in RFC2543, the current standard is contained largely in RFC3261 and RFCs 3262–3265.

Capacity notes
  1. Capacity varies with the number and class of servers, devices and UC client applications.
  2. Stations are hard or soft SIP line registrations, including IP phones and analogue phones connected through a media gateway. Trunks are per-bearer-channel registrations, including tie lines and analogue, digital and SIP PSTN connections.
  3. Mobility calls are calls to or from external phone numbers assigned to users, on the PSTN or another PBX connected over a tie line.
  4. Per-node capacity varies with server class, hosted UC client applications and reserve capacity for failover, among other factors.
  5. Redundant multi-node networks reserve capacity for failover. For n nodes, each node has primary capacity ((n−1)×6,000)/n lines and reserves 6,000/n lines for failover. With 2 nodes: 3,000 primary and 3,000 reserved lines per node. With 11 nodes: 5,455 primary and 545 reserved lines per node.
  6. C-link is a proprietary protocol for trunking to traditional NEC PBX systems.
  7. Capacity and performance vary with server class, network infrastructure and bandwidth.

Page 3 — Security, System Evolution and media

Security (note 11)
  • TLS: SIP call control, HTTPS application sessions, configuration-file and firmware downloads over HTTPS.
  • sRTP: audio and video media streams.
  • RTMPE: InForm Voice Web Conferencing browser audio, video and content sharing.
  • User authentication: uniform credentials with Active Directory authentication.
  • Security certifications stated in the datasheet: US Department of Defense Joint Interoperability Test Command Unified Capabilities Requirements — Information Assurance, PBX level 1 and Local Session Controller.
Upgrades from existing NEC platforms

Existing UNIVERGE SV customers can expand towards a full IFV system while retaining most applications and legacy hardware. COMTEL offers tailored evolution solutions based on its experience in voice over IP and data networks, and its support for maintaining and expanding earlier NEC systems.

Unified Communications Manager media
  • Audio encoding (note 12): AMR-WB, CLEARMODE, G.722, G.722.1, G.729, iLBC, G711a (PCMA), G711u (PCMU), SIREN14, SIREN22, T.38, telephone-event, v150fw and NoAudio.
  • Video: H261, H263, H263-1998, H264, MPEG4_QVGA and MPEG4_VGA.

  • Frame rates: 8, 10 and 20 fps.
  • Chat: HTTP/HTTPS.
Additional source notes

8. This is accomplished by separating the UNIVERGE 3C Phones Server module from the other parts of the CMM server.

9. NEC does not claim to support all aspects of the standards or ensure full interoperability with every SIP device. Features and functions are supported for certified SIP stations; see product manuals.

10. Limited support for RFC3262. 11. Capabilities vary with selected endpoints. 12. Supported codecs and media formats vary by endpoint; certain media services may restrict codec use. Refer to the UNIVERGE 3C system requirements.
